Dexter este un serial bazat pe romanul scris de Jeff Lindsay in 2004 intitulat "Darkly Dreaming Dexter".Actiunea serialului are loc in Miami, avandu-l in rol principal pe Dexter Morgan,un criminal in serie, care lucreaza in cadrul politiei Miami, ocupandu-se de laboratorul criminalistic unde beneficiaza de toate cunostintele pentru a avea o acoperire perfecta si pentru a nu fi demascat.
În timpul zilei, Dexter Morgan e un angajat model al laboratorului criminalistic al poliţiei din Miami, dar aceasta este doar o mască ce ascunde adevărata sa identitate. În realitate, Dexter este un criminal meticulos (un monstru precum şi el admite) care îşi satisface setea de sânge în timpul nopţii. La adăpostul întunericului el urmăreşte şi apoi omoară criminalii pe care legea nu-i poate atinge, totul cu grijă şi determinare.
